Intercession: 1. Two types of intercession: Christ’s intercession and the saints’ intercession. 2. Examples of intercession. 3. Do angels and saints know our state on earth? 4. The status of saints with God. 5. The spirituality of intercession through saints. 6. The liturgical image of Saint Mary. 1. Two Types of Intercession: Christ’s Intercession and the Saints’ Intercession Protestants entirely reject intercession through either the Virgin Mary or the saints. They base this on the Apostle John’s statement: ‘We have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous’ (1 John 2:1) and the Apostle Paul’s words: ‘For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus’ (1 Timothy 2:5). In truth, there is a fundamental difference between Christ’s intercession and the saints’ intercession. Christ’s intercession is an atoning intercession, meaning that Christ intercedes for the forgiveness of our sins as He is the atonement who paid the price for our sins. It’s as though His intercession implies that He says to the Father, ‘Leave the account of their sins to me, for I have borne these sins for them’ (Isaiah 53:6). Saints’ Intercession The intercession of the saints is simply prayer on our behalf and not at all like the atoning intercession of Christ. The Bible supports this, as it says, ‘Pray for one another’ (James 5:16). The saints themselves requested prayers from others. For example, Saint Paul asked the Thessalonians, ‘Pray for us’ (2 Thessalonians 3:1). If saints ask for our prayers, why wouldn’t we ask for theirs? If we ask for prayers from the living who are still in their earthly struggles, should we not also request prayers from the saints who have completed their struggles and are now in Paradise, living with Christ? This summary covers the primary themes you mentioned, focusing on the distinction between intercession types and theological support for the intercession of saints.
