Jesus did not reveal the exact time of His Second Coming; He emphasized that only God knows the date. However, He did point out events that would precede it. 1. Destruction of the Temple and Jerusalem: [Jesus said to them, “Do you see all these things? Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; everyone will be thrown down!” (Matthew 24:2)] And: [When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city. For this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written. How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people. They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.” (Luke 21:20-24)] 2. Appearance of False Prophets: [For many will come in My name, claiming, “I am the Messiah,” and will deceive many… and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. (Matthew 24:5, 11)] And: [For many will come in My name, claiming, “I am he,” and will deceive many. (Mark 13:6)] And: [“Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in My name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them.” (Luke 21:8)] 3. Wars, Famines, and Natural Disasters: [You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains. (Matthew 24:6-8)] And: [When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains. (Mark 13:7-8)] And: [“When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.” Then He said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, famines, and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.” (Luke 21:9-11)] 4. Persecution of Christians for Christ’s Sake: [“Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of Me. At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other. (Matthew 24:9-10)] And: [“You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues. On account of Me, you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them.” (Mark 13:9)] And: [“Make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves. For I will give you words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends, and they will put some of you to death. Everyone will hate you because of Me. But not a hair of your head will perish. Stand firm, and you will win life.” (Luke 21:14-19)] 5. Loss of Love and Faith, and Increase in Wickedness: [Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold. (Matthew 24:12)] [“Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death.” (Mark 13:12)] And: [“But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.” (2 Timothy 3:1-5)] 6. Spread of the Gospel Worldwide: [And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. (Matthew 24:14)] And: [“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20)] And: [And the gospel must first be preached to all nations. (Mark 13:10)] 7. Appearance of the Antichrist: [“So when you see ‘the abomination that causes desolation,’ spoken of through the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place—let the reader understand—then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.” (Matthew 24:15-16)] And: [“When you see ‘the abomination that causes desolation’ standing where it does not belong—let the reader understand—then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. If the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom He has chosen, He has shortened them.” (Mark 13:14, 20)] And: [“The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.” (1 Timothy 4:1-2)] And: [“Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God’s temple, proclaiming himself to be God. Don’t you remember that when I was with you, I used to tell you these things? And now you know what is holding him back, so that he may be revealed at the proper time. For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of His mouth and destroy by the splendor of His coming. The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders that serve the lie, and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.” (2 Thessalonians 2:3-10)] And: [“Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour.” (1 John 2:18)]
