Is practicing magic permitted in Christianity? Is practicing magic permitted in Christianity? And what is Christianity’s stance on magic and magicians who perform magical acts? • Magic comes in various forms, including performing supernatural feats that go beyond human comprehension, communicating with the dead, summoning spirits, fortune-telling, and attempting to predict the future. Regardless of the methods or means used in magic, it is considered magic because it involves supernatural powers that surpass human understanding or capacity. Referring to the Bible, we find that magic is strictly forbidden in Christianity, in all its forms. This is because through magic, we desecrate the name of God and rely on the devil to perform acts that God has forbidden in His Holy Scripture, which states: “Do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of those nations. Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord…” (Deuteronomy 18:9-12). God also says, “Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the Lord your God” (Leviticus 19:31). There are also references in the New Testament that strongly condemn magic and threaten those who practice it with eternal punishment. In the Book of Revelation, it says: “But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death” (Revelation 21:8). Additionally, God says: “Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city. Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters” (Revelation 22:14-15). The Apostle Paul also warns against magic, stating that anyone who engages in it will not inherit the Kingdom of God (Galatians 5:20). Therefore, Christianity unequivocally forbids magic in all its forms.
